also, food for though, 15's on drag slicks? why? id be keeping the 8.5 for a drag truck in comparison to a 9.5, why does tube diameter matter? 9.5 is going to have alot more parasitic drag than say a car 12 bolt, ford 8.8, 9" maybe even. now let alone still a c clip axle (so is 8.8) but still why? weight wise its gonna hurt more. but on a sidenote theres a few turbo ls swapped guys still running rebuilt 10 bolts on slicks, one guy that comes to mine is AWD 10 bolt rear, stock 8.25 front, np241 case, 4l65e with a turbo ls. lives just fine if you can be smart about it and launch proper.

The 10 bolt in my c1500 was shot at 100k and has had a pretty easy life. Rebuilt it for cheap, but I have no plans for big hp mods, offroading, or doing wheelies. If I towed at it's capacity very much I would swap a 14 bolt in in a heartbeat. "Built 10 bolts" seem like a waste of time and money.

I never said it was out of a GMT400 Escalade... I believe they were available up to 2006. http://z71tahoe-suburban.com/iboard/lofiversion/index.php?t44564.html

The wording "To answer your question; the 14bolt semi-float out of Escalades, LD2500s, and heavy half K1500s should all bolt right in to a 1500. I believe the spring perches are the same spot as a 10bolt." made that sound like they bolted in hence GMT400 escalade.

The 14SF was used in a bunch of other trucks too, however the GMT800 6-lug variant is what gm calls a "hybrid" axle (RPO AXN). Its a 14SF center with 10-bolt tubes/brakes/axles/bearings. The GMT400 version is a bit beefier than anything in the GMT800 and GMT900 variant. You can find this hybrid axle under things like the Silverado SS, the Vortec Max pickup, and the 6.2L powered pickups. They will only be behind 2wd or 4wd, not AWD powered vehicles.
Yes it is the F44 package I am referring too. Most people call them heavy halves based on GVWR, not based on what they were actually called. A K1500 with an F44 has a higher GVWR than one without, therefore making it a heavy half.

That is also why I called my 1996 K1500 a heavy half, even though it only had a 10 bolt. It was registered for 7200lbs instead of the typical 6100lbs. I'm not 100% sure on those numbers but it was something like that.
Just because some people call them that, doesn't make it correct... Fact is there is not "heavy half" package for these trucks, just the F44 Heavy Duty Suspension.

Also, I can register my 98 dually for 20k if I want, doesn't make it a Class 4 truck...

...you might want to refrain from posting in my threads then, honestly.

I will answer this though:
why does tube diameter matter?[/QOUTE]
Structurally speaking: There is far more strength to be gained in increasing the diameter of tubing then the the thickness of the material...

Anyway- save your soy-boy 10 bolt 4l60e stroking... youve obviously never had a car with 3 wheels cut across your lane at the 60' mark.

Guys-i am new to this forum, but not gmt400s, racing, or axle swaps.

Ill paint and sell the 10 bolt to some sucker who thinks hammerbrite and a diff cover make a 10 bolt live...

Ill thrash on a $250 locked up SF 14 bolt until I go full float 9".

...Im going to refrain from saying "heavy half" or answering ads for them... it is a made up term for the gmt400s.

As some pointed out- the 7200gvw rating is what gets the 6 lug 14 bolt.

The 4x2s are ~3" shorter...

The drums interchange so use that as a template to drill from 6 lug to 5... except Im going 5x4.75 if I re lug it.

So for now just matching steelies- one being 5 lug. One being 6.

I hope this 14 bolt 9.5" rimg gear axle is as strong as a 10 bolt...
