Is it true they bolt right in?

Are they the same WMS as the 5 lug?

What LSDs came in them?

To answer your question; the 14bolt semi-float out of Escalades, LD2500s, and heavy half K1500s should all bolt right in to a 1500. I believe the spring perches are the same spot as a 10bolt. As for the LSDs, I don't believe GM put any LSDs in these things from factory - they should all be Eaton G80s, aka the grenade80.

For reference, my last 3 K1500s had a 14bolt SF under them, and I've had to swap all 3. The first one was in my 96 K1500, which was a heavy half but only had a 10bolt, so I swapped it to a 14bolt. Second was my 97 K1500 6.5TD. I blew the rear end doing burnouts and replaced it with a 14bolt out of an escalade. And the last one was just changed 2 weeks ago on my current 97 K1500. There was too much internal wear and backlash was getting bad, so I completely refurbished another 14bolt and put it in.

They do bolt right in...just need the right conversion u joint.
The axle tubes are not 3"; they're 3.5"...so new/bigger u-bolts are required.
If equipped with a traction aiding device (RPO G80), it is an Eaton gov-lock. The 9.5" unit is better than the one found in the 8.5" 10 bolt, but by no means bullet proof. I have a trutrac in mine.

There's also no such thing as a GMT400 "Heavy Half" - that's a squarebody era package. There is a GMT400 with the F44 suspension package that does include the 9.5" 14 bolt and an extra leaf in a heavier duty spring pack. If you had a 1500 you were referring to as a "heavy half" and it had a 10 bolt then there was nothing heavy about it. :)

A little more clarification, correct in that they did not come with LSD's. They could be optioned with lockers, the Eaton Gov-Loc, RPO code G80. Not all of them were lockers. The G80 even though reported to be stronger in the 9.5" 14 bolt, is still a relatively weak unit, and if you beat on it in the mud or on the drag strip I would not be surprised if it exploded. The shock load a locker takes when it suddenly gains traction is what generally spells the end of them.

And on what 88GMCTruck said - yeah, don't recall any GMT400 Escalades (or Yukon Denalis either) coming with anything other than a 10 bolt.

If you're gonna swap a 9.5" 14 bolt in place of a 10 bolt, don't forget to grab the U-bolt saddles.

Also, the GMT400 era Escalade didn't include a 14 bolt axle...

I never said it was out of a GMT400 Escalade... I believe they were available up to 2006. http://z71tahoe-suburban.com/iboard/lofiversion/index.php?t44564.html

Yes it is the F44 package I am referring too. Most people call them heavy halves based on GVWR, not based on what they were actually called. A K1500 with an F44 has a higher GVWR than one without, therefore making it a heavy half.

That is also why I called my 1996 K1500 a heavy half, even though it only had a 10 bolt. It was registered for 7200lbs instead of the typical 6100lbs. I'm not 100% sure on those numbers but it was something like that.
