I have a 1991 k1500 4x4 rcsb with a 4.3l and the 5 speed (4 with overdrive) and my question is what transmission is it. I've asked this question many other places and i've gotten many different answers. I realize i can find some numbers on the side but i really just don't feel like crawling under there in the snow here. So it's probably too early to be nv3500 right? What number am i looking for on the transmission to find what it is if that's what i have to do?

If it's the original then it's a 99% chance it's a nv3500.

The nv3500 was not released until 93.

The nv3500 shifter is also labeled 1-2-3-4-5-R

5lm60 and earlier is 1-2-3-4-OD-R

The shifter will not interchange because when the nv3500 was released had it had a single shift rail and the 5lm60 and earlier had 4 shift rails.

He has a 5LM60

Great info Scotty - though I wouldn't go strictly on year model, since these are known for blowing up easily, may have been replaced with a different year unit out of the boneyard.

Pictures of the casing and any identifying marks would help "put the nail in the lid"....
