heres a question since this has strewed from just boxes. as for amps is 400w enough for 2 10s and an 8 or how does all that work?

When you say 10s and an 8, do you mean 3 woofers at the same time?

If so you will be better off with just 2 10s and no 8 since having tens and an 8 could cause some cancellation and loss of out put. Secondly, 3 subs on 1 amp being 2 channel or 1 gives you mixed ohm loads/ irregular ohm loads that either wont work well together or aren't stable for the amplifier.

400rms being enough for 2 10s is dependent on the subwoofer, and the enclosure that it is in. You can't give a generality that 10s like say 200rms. There are 150w 10s and 5000wrms 10s.

When I say box dependent, you can put a 100rms sub in a super tiny box and have it handle 500w because of the higher suspension control (harder time bottoming out), but it will still eventually fail thermally depending on the size and type of coil. You can also put a 1000wrms sub in a overly big box and get it to maximum excursion with 750watts.

If you don't want to deal with all of this, put them in a manufacture recommended enclosure size and on manufacturer rated watts rms.

Actually the sensitivity of the subs has more to do with it than the wattage of the amp. If youre only getting 86-88db of sensitivity youre going to need a lot more watts to get loud. If youre at 96-98db you can get by with less.

You are wrong, sorry, sensitivity of subwoofers is measured at 1khz. When does a car subwoofer ever play 1khz? Never... They play 20-100hz generally. If it a home audio woofer then sensitivity matters a little more since they generally play mid bass frequencies as well.

I agree that the measurement is taken at 1khz. And you are right that most subs dont go that high. But generally speaking, a sub with a higher sensitivity rating will make better use of a given wattage. Not always, but as a general rule.
