Sub and amp on stock 96(5?) Stereo

Like the title says, is it possible to run a sub and amp using the stock stereo in a 96? I seem to remember hearing about this somewhere. I can get a superb deal on a single sub and a matching amp, but I can't afford a headunit on top of that of I do get it.
