So, since I've got a stepside, I barely have room in the bed as is. Toss in a tool chest and the 35" spare, and I've pretty much got a 2 seater car.

I've been trying to think of some way to carry the spare, outside of the box. I like the idea of a TireGate, but they are $$$$ and don't make them for stepsides anyways. I have found a few that were fabbed up, and I like them better than actual TireGates, since they have more support to carry the weight.

It can be flipped with the tire out as well, to open the box up completely.

I've also tossed around the idea of some sort of hitch mounted carrier, or if I do bumpers other than the stock, a carrier on that.

What do you guys think? Opinions? Ideas?

This is what I've come up with. Modified some designs, and may still need to continue to modify once I get some better measurements.

The design in the second post gets my vote over the first pic. I like the way the tire sits to the inside better.
Color matched? Black? Chrome ? (kidding)
Are you buying a kit and modifying it or starting with some tubing and fabbing the whole thing yourself?

It would be completely fabbed. I'm not going to give a grand for one and start chopping it up lol

That SketchUp design will need modified a bit more to work. I think I will still need to marry it more.

I think your idea is great, And if you or a buddy has good welding skills, I don't see why it wouldn't be feasible.

I feel your pain.

I have mine down in the bed most of the time, but have a simple mount that stands it up inside the bed, which helps. Many times I leave the spare out when i'm near home. it did make things complicated for camping and hauling quads. I solved my spare tire problem though, with the dually.
