I just got all new rear brakes and rear axels, just after that, I noticed a very slight high pitched noise that seems to be coming from the differential at highway speeds.... What could this mean? It could be my tires they hum very loud and create a lot of road noise but this sound seems different, any ideas will help. Thanks.

Pop your diffy cover and check your ring gear. There is a magnet on the cover. Check for metalic material. A bad pinion bearing will knock you ring gear outa whack and cause excessive wear. This will give the howl.

What do you mean by "rear axle(s)"? Did you have new gears put in it?

Maybe the gears weren't shimmed correctly.

Brakes too tight? Did you replace bearings and seals since you were there? It could even just be the drum running the backing plate

Are you sure it's coming from the diff and not out near the wheels?

My first thoughts are, why were the axleshafts replaced. (Bad bearings causing wear?) Were the bearings replaced too?

Is there enough oil in the system?
