Question: how necessary are those brackets? One of my mechanic friends said that those are not necessary at all (when I was doing my motor swap). I argued that GM put them there for a reason and they WILL go back; so they did.
As much as many of us like to joke about engineers designing things to screw the mechanics that work on them later, your mechanic friend would be wrong. Those supports are there to do a job, and that's to stabilize the accessory drive system. I wouldn't leave them off; it's lazy and could lead to something in the system failing sooner than it normally would. Cracked brackets would be the most likely result.
