96 tilt wheel column swapped into a 98 without tilt?

I know people have asked about column swaps but I can’t find any info on this. I remember a gm tech was telling me years ago that 98 was the first or around the first year for passlock. My 98 has a solid non tilt column but I have a 96 parts truck with a nice column in it. My question is will it directly swap over? If it’s not a direct swap will it swap at all without modifying my wiring or cutting things up? If it won’t swap what are my options? Is the juice even worth the squeeze or would it be wasted time?

It would be better if you could find a 98 donor, otherwise there will be some wiring to do and your passlock will have to be disabled one way or another because 96-97 didn't have provisions for it. The columns themselves should physically fit the same tho.

1996 one air bag, 1997, 2 air bags, large. 1998 small, 2 air bags and pass lock. Better to find a donor column. $150 is the going rate and a simple swap.

Oh yeah I forget about the airbags being different. Not much chance of making that work without it (potentially literally) blowing up in your face.

I’ll keep an eye out for a 98 column. Thankfully my truck is not an airbag truck so I don’t have to worry about that.
