the arm itself just pops out of the column with a little persuasion, and a wire runs down the steering column underneath the dash

ok had a look at the two diagrams - 89 and 91, and here's the differences
Left dir - need to move wire from A11(89 clustrer) to A10(91)
gauge fuse - need to move wire from A10(89) to A9(91)

you'll have to study some instrument panel diagrams and verify that you do have a 91 cluster

i did an 88 to 93 cluster swap. this required wiring in a DRAC.
89 to 91 should be plug and play from what ive read. you'll just have to run a wire to the cluster from your coil for the tach. B15 on the intrument panel plug should be for the tach

everything worked perfectly too. sold my original and broke out just shy of even :)
took me a couple of days to install and fine tune. big mess of wiring. ended up being 2x cluster connectors under my dash, so alot of the time was spent cleaning it up
both clusters connected...
no problem.

and there is a couple of places here in Aust. that i could get a RHD dash from, but it'd be expensive to purchase and expensive to send to canada.

can just see the bottom of the blower motor on the passenger side(your drivers side)

i'd check oxygen sensor and timing first
maybe try unplugging oxygen sensor to keep it in open loop...
i'd be checking the harness and wiring that goes to the controller first, make sure its all ok. might be a connection issue.
the later years came with a 'max' and 'recirc' button on the control head and are wired slightly different. also the door actuators are slightly diff. i was looking...
same with me. i diagnose and fix everything thing i possibly can. as i know my work is more trustworthy and thorough than anyone i can take it to, especially here in australia. no one knows what the f they're doing with it
and forums like these usually provide whatever help you need to get...
