PS pump internals beyond hope? (pics)

@Schurkey & @BVRPLZR The outside of the rotor only touches oil. The rotor in the first picture has a fast lathe cut, each line is even. The side of the rotor can show wear. The picture of the cam ring shows wear. You would also check the pressure plate and thrust plate for wear. Harder to see...

98 5.7 power steering whine and hard to turn after warmed up.

Hard to know if the tensioner spring is worn out without comparing it to a new one, but there is a test you can do. Need 2 people. With the engine running above idle, have a buddy turn the steering wheel. Is the tensioner bouncing up and down? If it is, most likely the spring in the tensioner...

98 5.7 power steering whine and hard to turn after warmed up.

Did you check the drive belt and spring loaded tensioner? Slipping multi V belts don't make the noise a regular V belt makes when it slips. The pump will have a whine when it is forced to work, when it is spinning too slow.

    $600 2000 C3500 CCLB

Yes, normal. What you want is zero lash on roller bearings. You tighten the inner nut tight while spinning the drum, then back it off 1/4 turn. When you install the outer nut tight over the lock ring it will push the inner nut across the threads. This will give no pre-load or leave any lash...

    The Stupid Engine Questions Thread

Condensation in the disturber cap. Quick fix, pull the cap and spray the inside of the cap with WD40. The WD40 will leave a residue. Think about a new cap and rotor.

Bought a CC Dually 454 Whipple

This is not something I would assume, or ever use. My question, how can one fluid be expected to replace 3 different Dexrons and 4 different Mercons? My answer, it cannot. There are aftermarket fluids that are much better than products labeled as Dex/Merc. Spending a little more buying a...

Transmission Yoke leak- 88 GMC 1500

If you have a one piece drive shaft, you can't chance how far the yoke is in the trans. Is the truck lifted? If it is you may need a longer drive shaft. Did you get a chance to take it apart for look see inspection?

Transmission Yoke leak- 88 GMC 1500

Yes, some model's yokes have a sealed plug. Some have a vent, they also have a spring and a vent seal. If it has a vent it would be a small hole dead center on the plug. Your yoke is most likely not vented. It damaged or rusted if it is leaking. Torque twist will damage a yoke. When you...

Dumb questions only smart people ask them

Joe was a great boss. If someone asked if they could ask a dumb question, that is what he said. One time someone else chimed in and said the same thing ' can I ask a dumb question... Joe's reply to him was "Sure, what dumb answer do you want?"

@sweetk30 Since this post moved to the top, I don't have a 'Big Boy' truck, but I do have my hobby wrecker to show you. 1998 3500HD with a Nomar 810 wrecker and 6000 lb. wheel lift. I added the auto loader (Duel-Tech) to the Nomar wheel lift.

    rear axle questions

Usually if you remove the one side bearing cap, there is clearance to drill the pinion shaft bolt out. Take you time and drill slow with a carbide tip drill bit. With a cutting torch, just cut out the pinion shaft.

    need help

For the OP if the pinion seal is leaking you want to check the pinion bearing before you take it apart. If the yoke moves up and down, then metal from the failing G80 has worn the bearings. Full rebuild is needed. GM parts for the G80 will cost more than the Aurburn LS. For a few bucks more...

can't get dist rotor to line back up

The new distributor most likely has the drive gear installed 180 degrees from how your original is installed. Knock the pin out, spin the gear 1/2 turn and install the pin. The pin mounting hole on the gear matches a gear tooth on one side, a tooth valley on the other side.

    Stupid rear break question.

Anti-seize in not the lube most people use. Anti-seize is for threads. The star adjuster is threaded. Doesn't rust up the adjusters like the grease that washes out over time.
  23. Turbo4whl

    Stupid rear break question.

The name auto adjusters, is somewhat misleading. The auto adjuster maintains the adjustment. When first installed with the shoes you need to manually adjust the brakes. If the brakes are installed and not adjusted, the travel of the shoes is out of the range for the "auto adjusters". As...
