Hi everyone I have a 1998 Chevy c2500hd with a vortec 350 and a 4l80e. I have noticed for a while that when my drivetrain gets up to temp a weird clicking rattling noise while under load or accelerating. It usually does it in 3rd or od but it does do it in 2nd as well. It sounds like it's coming from the trans somewhere, and I don't think it is coming from the engine. It does make the sound in idle from time to time and is accompanied by a erratic idle that jumps up and down by 150ish rpm. About 5,000 miles ago the trans fluid was changed by a trans shop and the level is fine and it doesn't smell burn. I have read online that a failing converter can make noises like these but idk and just wanted to ask some of you. Thanks.

Was the trans flushed or just a simple pan drop and filter/gasket changed? If they didn't flush the trans the old fluid was left in the converter and is now mixed with the new washing all the garbage out of every nook and cranny. Then all the debris that was sealing old noises are now showing themselves. Make sense?

It was just a fluid and filter change. I have heard horror stories from people flushing there turbo hydromatics so k didn't want to risk it. That is a possibility though. A cracked flex plate might be another possibility. Can you see from the inspection plate if your flexplate is cracked or is it covered up too much by the converter?
