Help! - lower timing cover U-Seal. Impossible!

Reporting back... I implemented the above (Permatex Black - LARGE amounts) without reusing the old U-seal. And... zero oil leaks thus far (over 3 weeks and counting). Key is to clean the surfaces like crazy, then repeat, until there is no residue whatsoever -- then hit it with the P-tex and...

Help - Distributor install questions (devil is in the details)

That repurposed distributor idea is genius (as is the starter-bump method... but that method scares me too much -- I just see gear pieces going flying everywhere inside the engine with my luck). So to close this out (and I am sure all of your input will likely help some poor old soul working...

Help - Distributor install questions (devil is in the details)

97 Vortec 5.7 (K1500). Since all threads on distributor installation have only bits and pieces of proper installation, and non of them are "complete" as there are some rather important intricacies that always manage to get glossed over... I am asking for a few points of clarification (and let...

Trouble installing harmonic balancer - it gets to the same spot and then binds

Okay fellas -- success! Finally. 2000 grit sandpaper on the snout and on the inside of the HB (this is the original HB to answer your ?'s) -- there were some small gouges on the snout, no longer after the 2000 grit. A little synth 10w-30 on both surfaces... and we have BUTTERY smooth...

Trouble installing harmonic balancer - it gets to the same spot and then binds

keys are lined up with keyway. this is the stock HB, the one I pulled off. Going to thoroughly clean and polish both surfaces and hit it with ATF on the 3rd attempt. There is a small bur on the key that I will carefully file down with a very fine grit file. Will keep posted on my results...

Trouble installing harmonic balancer - it gets to the same spot and then binds

Cannot get past a certain spot on reseating my harmonic balancer -- it gets to the same spot (only halfway home) and just STOPS. All forward progress halts and it's either the installer bearing that is going to implode or I am going to commit the unpardonable sin of stripping out the crank...

Help! - lower timing cover U-Seal. Impossible!

Hey Skylark -- really appreciate you chiming in. Thanks for the input and guidance. I will prep all surfaces meticulously before I lay down that big fat bead (will apply on both surfaces too). This will be a pretty substantial amount of aggregated Ultra Black -- I would venture to guess the...

Help! - lower timing cover U-Seal. Impossible!

1997 K1500 5.7 -- conflicting information. Some say to use the old lip seal at the bottom of the timing cover (but mine is SWOLE and will not allow re-entry into that tight space (without removing oil pan). Shy of removing the oil pan (which I want to avoid at all costs), I want to be able to...
