    Flat tops???

There are plenty of compression calculators that will allow you to pick the heads you want to use along with the piston shape and get the approximate compression ratio. You can tailor your desired compression with various pistons on "paper" before you commit to the purchase. If you want to run...

    1/2 ton diesal

I have heard that the 4BT came in Ford's F350 models down in South America.

MPG Question (point me in the right direction)

True enough, the catch is that the engines are usually geared to leave some hp on the table. By that I mean that the 3 cylinder engine may make the 60 hp required @ 4000 rpm for a vehicle to maintain speed, while the V10 makes that 60 hp around 400 rpm. The problem is that the gearing makes...

MPG Question (point me in the right direction)

Check out some of the hypermiling forums for driving styles that are economically advantageous. Most of them are very tough to follow without annoying everyone else on the road around you. Typically it is far better to accelerate lightly and use downhill runs to increase your speed. Don't try...

    Possibly moving to FL

Lake Worth is a fairly expensive area to buy in, but there's a range of apartment prices so you should be able to find something tolerable. You'll like the weather there, it's pretty pleasant year-round. Coming out of VT, it'll be a bit of a shock, but if you are into palm trees, sunshine...

    5.7 vs 5.3

There is some mixing and matching of various SBC models and the overall topic is a comparison of a 5.7 vs a 5.3 LS in towing. A vortec head seems to make the entire motor a vortec motor, but a TBI induction system made the engine a TBI motor (generically, no particular individual references...

    5.7 vs 5.3

Not from a stock tune with all stock parts. Yes, all SBC's have enormous potential. I've pulled 400+ hp and gotten 22 mpg out of one without Nitrous or forced induction - and that's nothing special. "TBI" motors are just low compression SBCs with a mild cam, marginal heads and a cheap fuel...

    5.7 vs 5.3

Gearing is everything. A LS motor is designed to provide more power and in stock form has some pretty nice upgrades over a stock 350. Better spark, better flowing heads, better induction system, - it's just a higher performance engine right out of the factory. It is built to handle higher...

Gas Millage (9mpg ???) === I know its been beat to death but im lost here

You had it bored as part of a rebuild, if the rings didn't seat well, you'd have poor compression, less power - and lousy mileage. Check the plugs for color - make sure they have a decent color to them. Verify that the air cleaner is able to flow air... Got headers? Check the wires for...

Gas Millage (9mpg ???) === I know its been beat to death but im lost here

How do you drive? My last 355 had a 700R4 behind it with 3.7 gears. Driven hard, 9 mpg was not difficult to do. Driven easy, 22 mpg was possible. You have the aerodynamics of a brick sh*thouse, quite a bit of weight and a lot of rolling resistance. You'll want to pretend you have a raw egg...

    oil pressure dropping at idol

You guys also need to remember that the gauges that GM used are the cheapest mass produced crap that they could find at the time. The fact that the needle moves shows that you have oil pressure - but the gauge itself is not much better than an idiot light. If you really want to get a...

    another vortec performance question

Definitely - but the research I have done shows that 45 years of SBC usage has put a lot of them on the marketplace and that the end result is a lot of aftermarket support. The LS is still fairly new in comparison and there isn't the selection and price level there yet. The "higher rpm"...

    another vortec performance question

Does it really? You can pull stupid levels of power out of a SBC and you can make power for less $$$ than on pretty much anything else. The LS engines have their own benefits - they make good power and they make it higher up on the rpm curve. The Vortec heads will flow plenty of air though...

Can someone help me out here? I have a LOT of steering play.

It's all cumulative. I'd start by fixing the front end, replace the bad stuff and see how much that tightens things up. How many miles are on the truck? The steering box won't last forever, at some point that will need some attention too. I'd park that thing until the repairs are complete -...
