Well as far as my limited knowledge of cam/spring ratios and 30 minutes up looking up numbers goes it seems like you choose a good combo. set the lash on a cylinder or 2 and turn the motor by hand and watch for binding. Maybe do the first phase of the adjustments turn over the engine over by hand a few times then do the second set turn over by hand a few times just watching for binding and feeling for hard spots. Pulling the spark plugs would help the feel of whats happening. I'm really hoping just getting oil in the lifters fixes this and I still think it might, but I know how frustrating it can be to have something go wrong like this. Did you by chance pre-soak the lifters in oil?

I didn't soak them. I was told to do it after the engine was back together.

Okay, so I have primed the engine. Adjusted the push rods (still left about 1/4-1/2' of bounce in them.) Put my distributor back on. Cranked it for a while with no fuel. Put fuel, it tried to start for like the first second. Now it doesn't sound like its got any life. I feel like its pumping in way too much fuel.

Compression gauge is showing 10-20 lbs. How do I get these rings to seat?

Do the plugs smell gas soaked. My experience is tbi tends to err on the rich side when in doubt and after having the battery unhoooked its all confused till it runs for a bit. Your sure you have the coolant temp sensor hooked up? unhooked it will run max rich.

add a little oil to each cylinder will make the rings seal, (I just use a little oil squirter but I'll guess less then a teaspoon) its really hard to diagnose an engine without being there.

The plugs do smell a little like gas. Where is the coolant temp sensor? I do have a plug with a single wire in it behind the distributor that's not hooked to anything.

Coolant temp sensor (ECT) is by thermostat on top front of the engine, there is a gauge sender on the head between Cyl. #1&3. I believe the wire by the distributor is a tach output but not to sure on that

If I was comjng over to help, this is what we'd do. Take the motor down past the intake. TBI off. Distributor/ignition off. Intake off. Adjust all 16 valves one at a time, using eo/ic method through the firing order at 1/2 turn past zero lash. Verify all pushrods rotate as engine is spun over by starter. Reinstall intake, verify TDC compression #1, stab in distributor and phase for imediate fire with about 6-8 degrees advance, wire ignition, etc.
