Just asking...

How do you accurately calculate to a hundredth of a mpg?

How else would you calculate it?

Miles on the trip meter divided by gallons it takes at the pump...

EDIT - Oh I think I see what you're saying. Yeah it might not be 100% accurate at the hundredth considering you can only see tenths of a mile on the trip meter. Should be pretty dang close though.

Miles divided by gallons. Use all the digits in the gas pump.

Guys, I'm just remarking about the calculation accuracy. Of course the pump is going to show you exactly how much fuel you put in the tank. Do you fill until the pump stops? Do you keep pumping until is spurts out of the filler neck? I'm really not sure a tank is filled to the EXACT same level each time it is filled. Did you have any extended idling time during this fill up? See where I'm going with this? It's just a little over the top to claim mileage down to the hundredth of an MPG using a calculator, odometer, and pump reading.

Basically it still gives you a round number between all the driving you've done

I myself don't go by all the digits tho, I'll go by the mileage divided by like 15.7 gallons or 18.2.

Go ten fill ups and record initial mileage, and record fuel added at each fillup, then divide. The larger numbers over a longer duration will give you a more accurate number. If you give a that much. I get 16 on the hwy, 14.5 - 15 mixed driving. Stock 350, extended cab, 2wd, sometimes heavy foot.

The only vehicles one could intelligently state an mpg rate down to a hundredth of a gallon are the vehicles that accurately calculate distance traveled and fuel metered through engine, both by computer.
