Did you have the truck as new if not how knows wat the previous owner did i would look at it as a good opportunity and do a swap you could go with a small black I would go with a old style 454 big block use a trans controller if it was me I would use a carbI would stay away for a ls and small block because of the weight you are pulling it not that hard to swap a motor im dow a ls 6.0 in a c20 to k20 conversion but I'm not going to pull no wigh
You do realize a well built EFI 383 with modern aluminum heads will blow the doors off a smog era carb 454? My 383 makes about 500 ft/lbs of torque at 3,000 rpm and carries 500 ft/lbs past 4,500 rpm. It is also better on fuel and lighter on the front end than an old cast iron 454 would be. 383 bolts right in place of a 350 as well, saving a ton of $$$ on adapting stuff over.

The oil on that drain plug looks like it came out of a diesel. And like it should have been changed a long time ago.

I wouldn't worry about the time frame or even the process the mechanic quoted. I would just focus on the total cost.

I would also assume that if you need to utilize whatever warranty comes from the engine manufacturer that you'll give up on the claim process long before you're able to collect on it.

It would also smoke a Vortec 454 in a drag race, towing with yours may be a bit more subjective I can't really say (you know I like to lug down in OD as much as possible). I don't count the Vortecs as smog era myself.

Yea and I will make the downshift before I go into PE. The 454s were getting better, but the GM HO Marine cammed 8.1L walks on my 383 towing. I need to get that one back into the Tahoe, but I have to finish the Budget L31 project first. You would love the 8.1L with even the stock cam.

Anything after 1970 is going to be low compression and questionable head flow. A stock 74 454 truck engine was rated for 240hp/355ft-lbs. A 99 Vortec 350 was rated at 255hp/330 ft-lbs. A 99 Vortec 454 was rated at 290hp/410 ft-lbs.

Holdener has a few videos with the GEN VI 454, and with just a cam, you can get to 400hp/500ft-lbs pretty quick. The Gen VII 8.1L is still a beast though. Beats out the 454 in everything. Low end torque and high end horsepower is better across the board. The only downside is that there is basically no aftermarket for it unless you want to spend big bucks with Raylar.

GenVI cams fit an 8.1 though.
