As far as exhaust stuff goes, from what I remember on my 98 it had two cats (along with two pipes) that went into a muffler with one exit. But that was on a k1500 with the 5.7, and was the reason I never went through the fuckery of installing a different muffler.
From what I could tell was that the NBS 1500HD was pretty much a 2500 with a lower GVWR. But the 1500HD was only available in a crew cab short bed, whereas you could get the NBS 2500 with the half ton grille (in 1999), every cab/bed config minus crew cab, and a 6L Vortec like what is said above, then of course in the later years get a 2500HD. All sorts of oddball stuff GM had going on at the time.
