Speedo malfunction

I have a 1990 Chevy Scottsdale with a 5.7 . The Speedo will quit working sometime driving down the road. Tap the speedo and it will start working again . What might cause this ?

Likely a bad connection on the plug that connects the cluster to the dash. It may have an issue with the speedo sensor/wiring or the speedometer itself.
