Get a 98 or newer. They are supported by HP Tuners and EFI Live. That way, it if you ever mod the truck and want to take full advantage of the engine mods you can get a tune. I should clarify that EFI Live supports 96 and newer while HP Tuners supports 98 and newer.

They're pretty solid trucks. Just like any other GMT400. I like vortecs simply for the extra power, but any TBI will be just as dependable. The absolute biggest pain you're going to find is that since these were family vehicles, 70% of the ones you look at will be ragged out in some way or another. Take your time when looking. Right now they aren't going for to much, 5k should get you a VERY clean truck.
