How can I find out what transmission I have??

1998 Z-71 Silverado short bed with 350 vortec engine. Automatic transmission. Pushbutton 4WD. Bought new in December 1997. Hit the search engine to no avail. Maybe I just didn't put in the right words!! Will the vin number help me out?? Numbers in the glovebox?? Original window sticker?? Only have 105K on engine and trans and transmission is starting to Bang into 2nd when shifting. Sometimes a little in 3rd. Need to fix this myself. Went back to school at 56YO and money is extra tight, especially at this time of year. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Kevin
