Axle Questions, Fitment, Compatability etc.

Found a few different axles kicking around to make it worth doing some more research on a solid axle swap. First off, I'm going to look for an 8-lug full float rear.. (might not go 8-lug during the swap, but down the road most likely)
What year of 14b FF will work? I'm assuming all 88-98 rear ends will work, but how about the 73-87s? Any other?


Now for the front end..

I'd LIKE to stick with a chevy axle, assuming I'd just be choosing between trucks from 73-87.. any years to stay away from, years to look for?

Is it worth it to go with the Ford front end? Just weighing options.. there are a few ford dana 44 fronts to choose from around here..
More aftermarket support for the ford axle?

I guess I'm just trying to determine what axle is going to cooperate with me nicely during this build. Heh.

I'd like to upgrade to 8-lug, but I can do that later down the road if necessary..

So either 73-87 Chevy D44/D60
Or 78/79 Ford D44
Or 90-92? Ford D60

If anyone has a preference or opinion on what axle to choose, please chime in

With the ford axle you can use your stock transfer case. If your wanting a dana 60 widen your years from 78-79 and 86-96. Rhe early d60s have a narrower spring perch width (32.5") vs (36"). The 78-79 dana 44s are high pinion which is what I prefer but earlier axles can be used too.

So Ford Dana60 from 78-79 or 86-96? 78-79 D60 is 32.5" perch, while 86-96 is 36" correct?
OR.. Ford Dana 44 from 78/79 is high pinion. (32.5" Perch)

So the 78/79 Ford Dana44, and the 78/79 or 86-96 Dana60 will allow me to use stock transfer case? All drivers drop?
