    Frame Rust: When to be concerned?

    I have welded patches in that area before, it one of the first places to look when buying, especially on the drivers side. Clean it up and see how it looks. I use coreseal for a rust neutralizer.

    Scan tool would be great, it an OBD1 and the paperclip and count the blinks is the only way I know how to read codes. Even using the paper clip trick it still might shine some light on the issue.

    Look at GM parts engines,they were around $2900-3500 CND when I was looking for an engine. I rebuild the original for $1800 with parts from rock auto and had the machining done locally. I didn't care about 2 or 4 bolt mains, i wasn't building a racer, just a decent runner.

    I did all this on the trucks that I have owned over the years, and I lapped welded all of them one time or another. I now use panel adhesive to do fender arches and some cab corners but generally weld in rocker panels. The whole truck was made with lap welds from the factory.

    Test, with a voltmeter, from that big power wire terminal on back of alienator to the alternator body. There should not be continuity.
