Fixing fuel gauge after deleting 2nd fuel tank?

I went through the schematics and figured it out. I had posted this on Farcebook in the GMT400 3500HD Trucks And Enthusiasts group, but didn't follow up here (sooo many social media platforms...) Not sure why a kit would be necessary, unless someone is just out to make a buck. Disconnect the...

'99 7.4L, what is this sensor?

It's the GMT-400 manuals. I attempted to join the gmt800.com forums to try to find the 2000 GMT-800 FSMs, but I can never get it to send a confirmation email. I also had a lot of trouble getting this forum to send me one. Not sure why, the emails are going to a gmail account, and they're not...

'99 7.4L, what is this sensor?

Well, what's odd (actually, more annoying than anything) is that the truck doesn't match the '99 FSM for some things. Here's an example: The '99 FSM shows this wiring diagram for the fuel balance module. The 2nd wiring diagram actually matches what's on the truck, but it's ONLY that one image...

'99 7.4L, what is this sensor?

Turns out this is technically a GMT-455 truck, and according to this link, "The Flint 3500hd line started in 1997. Only Summit White cabs sold for domestic use were produced here. All other 3500hd units were still produced at the Janesville plant." I guess since the paint code on the RPO sheet...

Fixing fuel gauge after deleting 2nd fuel tank?

My '99 3500 HD (7.4L/4L80E) was originally equipped with dual tanks. I'm unclear if one of the previous owners deleted the rear tank or or whatever company put the dump bed on did it (though I suspect it wasn't them). The problem is the fuel gauge is always indicating empty and it's throwing a...

    4L80E w/ Transmission Drum E-brake Leaking

I think these are good enough that I see what I need to do. Probably get some 3/16" plate, cut out a bracket, and weld a tab with a gusset on it. According to the FSM, the brake tension is set to 50 pounds of tension, and 3/16" plate will have no trouble with that. All I need to do now is roll...

Der Lastwagen :) The top of the box (that flat area) is being cut off to make it a more useful dump truck.

'99 7.4L, what is this sensor?

Very close. XF, not XJ :) Curiously, there is no door jamb sticker. And I don't see any faded paint, sticker residue, etc to indicate where one might have been. It has the federal compliance disclaimer sticker, but that's it. It had a USDOT number at one time, and I'm would have thought the...

    4L80E w/ Transmission Drum E-brake Leaking

I am at least happy to report that replacing the rear seal and/or cleaning up the corrosion on the yoke has so far appeared to fix it spewing ATF everywhere. Now to fix the remaining dozen issues... Leaking oil pressure sender (that's a whole 'nother thread), knock sensor(s), O2 sensors...

'99 7.4L, what is this sensor?

Lots of good stuff there, thanks! I wonder if I can use a endoscope camera to get a look at the block stamping. It's probably crudded over, but it's worth a try. Here's the RPO sheet from the truck. The VXT option probably explains why the VIN decoders will only do a partial decode on it.

'99 7.4L, what is this sensor?

I'm not sure of the assembly date, I don't have a door sticker. Do you know of anywhere else it might be? I'm still learning about these things, but this was based on the old guy at the auto parts store who generally knows his stuff (a real auto parts store, not Autozone/Advance). He said the...

'99 7.4L, what is this sensor?

I've never seen a power steering system that has any connection to the engine block (as far as fluid and such). Given the location shows as "oil galley plug" in the FSM, I now believe it's a late model change that moved the oil pressure sensor. The easy test will be to disconnect it and see if I...

'99 7.4L, what is this sensor?

No, this is definitely into the side of the block, right at the front edge. According to the FSM, there's a bolt there for an oil galley plug. I just can't find any documentation for an oil pressure sender being installed there, in either the engine parts diagrams or in the wiring diagrams.

'99 7.4L, what is this sensor?

OK. But according to the factory service manual, oil pressure should be coming off the "fuel pump oil pressure switch and sender", which is located at the rear of the block on the drivers side. I did check both the '98 and '99 FSMs, and don't see it. I've seen other discrepancies, like the 7.4L...

'99 7.4L, what is this sensor?

I'm 99.44% sure this is an oil pressure sensor, but I'm not sure why it's here. This is right at front of the block on the left side, just behind the power steering pump. The FSM doesn't make any reference to it, and in the parts diagram this location is listed as "oil galley plug". The oil...

    4L80E w/ Transmission Drum E-brake Leaking

Any chance you could take a few pictures, maybe with a ruler placed for scale? I don't mind trying to fab one, but I can't find any pictures that show just the bracket (they're all pictures of the transmission, and just a little bit is visible here and there).

    Can't Post in Classifieds

I have to say, as a new member, it is frustrating. I'm looking for a fairly obscure bracket for my 4L80E, and not being able to draw on the resources of the people with parts to sell who watch the Wanted section makes it that much harder to find. I'm generally not a very active poster on forums...

    4L80E w/ Transmission Drum E-brake Leaking

OK, here's what I learned today. The run-out seems to be 0.005" to 0.007", so we're good there. Using a tape measure, I put the yoke on the output shaft, and set it where the seal would land on the seal face on it (about 7.25" from where the extension housing meets the transmission), the...

    4L80E w/ Transmission Drum E-brake Leaking

You been a MASSIVE help, thanks very much! You're correct I was measuring run out, not end play. I'll have to measure the end play in the morning. I have the 4 volume GMT400 factory service manuals. I'm thinking of ordering the ATSG manual, although I was hesitant as a number of reviews said...

    4L80E w/ Transmission Drum E-brake Leaking

Man, this stuff gets confusing. And factory service manual is pretty vague on a lot of it, too. According to the identification chart you posted, it seems what I should need is the "heavy duty fixed yoke", not the "long heavy duty fixed yoke": I did just measure mine as a sanity test, and...

    4L80E w/ Transmission Drum E-brake Leaking

So it looks like I have the slip yoke output shaft. I can't tell how well this will work, as I suppose it could allow the yoke to slip out of the seal. What I don't understand is where there's any slip if bolt-on yoke is used. The stub shaft universal would bolt to the yoke, and the back of the...

    4L80E w/ Transmission Drum E-brake Leaking

Wow, I'm surprised some transmission don't have a parking pawl. I'd figure that be some sort of liability issue with not having one in an automatic, given the way drivers are conditioned. I'm not how the swap was handled, e.g., if it was just a completely different transmission, if they swapped...

    4L80E w/ Transmission Drum E-brake Leaking

It is a roller bearing in the drum brake extension housing. Actually, two of them. And correct, there was a seal there. No play that I can detect when the yoke is the bearings. I need to take a picture of the back of the transmission to confirm with y'all how the extension housing drains back. I...
