1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

Exhaust is on, running well, no overheating!!! On the way home from the exhaust shop, engine threw a code. Low voltage on the knock sensor. That's what I get for buying non-AC Delco parts... will be pulling the intake and installing new knock sensors...

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

Makin' Progress. Got the fuel pump replaced and fuel ran to the motor. Intake manifold on. Exhaust manifolds in place (waiting on new bolts). And first timing copper alloy brake lines to the drift brake--so I'll be redoing them with proper tools tomorrow. The permanent PCV valve in this...

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

These things were a total pain in the ass. I found what the internal part looked like and couldn't depin them despite all the tools. Eventually just pulled them through the front and clipped them right behind the connector. Good news story on the motor and trans. A young soldier showed up...

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

NEED HELP! I'm selling the engine/trans out of the van complete down to the wiring harness. I am trying to figure out how to depin the wires from the bulkhead connection at the firewall. I've searched around a bit, but don't know how these specific connections can be depinned from the plug...

Thanks. I assume the 3.42. We're putting in a tuned high output 6.0 from a caddy in it. Likely 400hp and 425+ft/lbs. I think you're right about the traction, especially once we get the posi in it. Guess we're likely to gear down.

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

Bits and piece are coming in for the 6.0L LS swap. Just picked up an Eaton Posi for it. Anybody know what stock gear ratios came in the rear end? Haven't jacked the van up to check and I'm away from it for the next few days. I recall the Napa guy saying 3.43 and 3.90 when I was ordering a...

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

Just picked up a 2004 Escalade with a strong running 6.0L. Currently going through the parts list to get the bits and pieces for the swap. should have done this from the beginning.

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

Super tempting, but I"ll have a 6.0L and 4L60E in the driveway in the next few days. My plan is to pull the 5.7TBI with everything on it and 700r4 and put it for sale as a combo. I've replaced just about everything on the motor, rebuilt the tbi, new sensors, etc, etc, etc. Somebody will get a...

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

Aiming for the 6.0 HO from an Escalade as luxury car owners typically don't abuse their vehicles. Budgeting 10K for this, but pretty sure I'll get it done for $5k with the harness, tranny, and accessories.

For the time and money it would take to upgrade a TBI motor... an LS is an easy decision.

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

So... The saga continues. Drove the van into Seattle yesterday and it was running perfect temp (actually a few degrees cooler than it had been) and then on the final hill into Seattle with traffic, it started heating up again. Pulled over, let the electric fan run for about 15 seconds...

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

The 160 was the only thermostat put in it after the tune up. The upper radiator hose is flowing well and confirmed everything with an IR temp reader. I checked with Harris. The Stage 1 chip reaches closed loop at 140 degrees and the motor changes idle at that temp. If you read above, I...

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

I'd thought about that as well. Installing the puller fans below the driver and passenger seats, then running ducting up behind the air cleaner. Pull the hot air out of the top of the doghouse and have it exit behind down and out behind the doors.

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

Thanks for the idea. If it's not running correctly after last nights "duh moment" bubble burp, I'll try this. The engine has lost zero coolant throughout this entire process. No white smoke. No sweet smell out of the exhaust. Passed the block gas test. I really think it was a bubble that...

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

Thanks for the help and support on this. I think the issue was a "duh" moment. Loosened the radiator cap, drove it up my test hill, temp climbed to 240, then immediately slammed back down to 160. Checked the radiator and the fluid was significantly down. Bottom line: I think it was a...

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

I've got a good performance flex fan on it AND a big electric fan constantly running on it. New Radiator. The engine runs at temp the majority of the time and has this intermittent overheating issue going slightly up-hill. No bubbles in the motor that I can tell. Fluid is flowing...

Total noob question, but what equipment would I need to check the ECM?

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

End of Day update: The engine is definitely getting hot. I was concerned of a blown head gasket, so I bought a block test kit. Drained the radiator a few inches, got the engine to temp, then conducted the test. Did it four times. No change in color on the fluid--indicating no head gasket...

1988 GMC Vandura 5.7L Weird Overheating Issue (A-Team Drift Van)

Hi Team, Been a while, but we got delayed on the A-Team Drift Van project from last year. Got solidly working on it over the last month and have a super peculiar overheating issue. I'll put the list of mods below, but I have a feeling this is a super simple issue (duh moment) that one of...
