Ok when I have my truck in 4wd it occasionally makes a grinding noise when starting off from a stop, I have only noticed this while driving in snow, havent driven it on dry pavement in 4wd so im not sure if it would happen then or not. And it only happens when first starting off but stops as soon as I let off of the throttle then ease back into it. The truck is a '94 sierra k1500 ecsb with s code 6.5 turbo diesel.

Mine made a noise like that when in 4x4 and on the front driveshaft there is a slip joint with splines. Mine had rusted off and got to the point that the 2 pieces of the front drive shaft would not turn together under load. Wouldn't hurt to check

check your u-joints! probably them if it does it mostly under a load

The u joints in the drive shaft between the transfer case and front diff? Just making sure I know which ones to check.

will def take a look at the cvs as well...i had a mini van once that chewed up cv joints and it made similar noises during a turn.

Agreed, I had a sneeking feeling it was the front drive shaft for the simple reason that the noise occured while in 4wd. Plus I know the balance weight on this shaft has broken loose and is just freely spinning around it. I was also told by the trucks prior owner to take a look at the pinion on the front diff as well. I do know where I can lay hands on an entire front driveline (cv axles, front drive shaft, diff) from the same '95 that donated it's engine, I should see about getting the parts and having the axles overhauled then installed into my truck. No sense in just throwing them in in unknown condition especially if they are gonna be sending power through 34" super swampers by summer.

Yes check both of the ones on your front driveshaft the one coming off the transfercase and the one going to your front diff.
