I just bought a high amp alternator for my 98 GMC C1500 and noticed it has a square plug. My current alternator has an oval plug and 1 wire. I’m only seeing square plugs with 4 wires when searching. Is there a square plug with one wire or am I wasting my time?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You could return the alternator and get the alternator with the correct harness for your truck. My ad244 power master from summit racing fit with the proper harness connection. Otherwise you'll have to find the connection that reads the system voltage and pull your harness off of an older vehicle. I know that 88-92 used that connection, but I'm not sure if it was particular models or not, but should be easy to find at a pick and pull, if they don't have it available at a local parts store.

The difference is all in the price. The AC Delco unit I have is only about a 140 amp alt... but also only $110 vs the 220 amp AD244 that Summit wants $350 for. I’ll check the junk yard later this week. That’s never my first thought but it tends to always be a good one. Thanks!

Just remove the extra wires from the replacement wire pigtail.

Thought about this too... just didn’t know if the other 3 were necessary for anything.

Other three wires aren't necessary for our trucks, just the remote voltage sensor. Make sure that alternator fits right, sounds like it might be for the TBI which had a different alternator bolt pattern and/or pulley location IIRC.

Ok... so my 98 C1500 had a CS130D and I decided to upgrade to a CS144. The CS144 uses the same bolt pattern but it has the square pigtail vs the oval pigtail on the CS130D. Both utilize the “L” pin to monitor voltage output. For the one wire applications such as mine, that’s the only pin you have to worry about in the pigtail. The CS130D puts out 105 amps new and the CS144 puts out 140 amps new. The price difference for new AC Delco parts was about $10 on Amazon so the upgrade was a no brainer. The square pigtail cost $8 on Amazon. When doing the upgrade, it’s pretty simple and straight forward... 2 bolts hold in the alt, 1 wire from the battery to disconnect, and then the pigtail. The CS144 is slightly bigger than the CS130D so you’ll have to massage the AC line that’s in the way. I used a pry bar to gently move it over and then I used a dead blow hammer on the alt when installing to help seat the alt and reshape the AC line (it gets squeezed a little). Regarding the pigtail, the new one comes with 4 wires... if you only need the “L” wire, take the pigtail apart and remove the other 3 wires. Use RTV to seal the holes on the back once the wires are removed to seal the pigtail. Splice the new pigtail in and you’re good to go. All total, it took about an hour because I was being cautious. Also, it took me a few minutes to get the bolt slides to back out so the new alt would fit in easy. If you don’t do this, you may be beating on the alt a little more than I had to. Now I have 14+ volts reading on the gauge and my lights don’t dim when I roll the window down. [emoji51][emoji51][emoji51]

What you had stock was a CS130D. The CS130 and CS144 are older and use the same rectangular plug. Don't confuse the CS130D and CS130 as they are very different.

Corrected. Thanks for the heads up... I’m a few google posts from knowing nothing about the electrical system.
