Pros and cons on 6.5 diesel

This tells it all. There are some competent mechanics. There are some aftermarket parts, though it'll never be the powerhouse that a Cummins, Duramax or PowerStroke can be. There are some knowledgeable forums, websites, and companies that can help. I'm truly sorry that your experience was so...

1990 k1500 86k miles $500 needs trans.

It'd be hard to go wrong at that price. You could part it out and scrap it for more if you decided that you were in over your head.
