Good move IMO. Keep looking and happy hunting, took me a couple of months to find a good base to start with once I had the money to buy one.

I looked at 11 different GMT400's, over 3 months, before I bought my first one. One will come up with your name on it, sooner or later. This one you were looking at has too many quirks, starting with the owner.

My first was a 95 Z71 that I hated. The only reason I got the 94 I have is because my father didn't need it to tow his boat anymore. It's a good thing I got it too because I swore I'd never own another one. Fortunately this one has been well maintained all 300+k, I did most of the maintenance. I've had it since 100k and it has been my most reliable tow vehicle. I was using 73-87 trucks before this one.

Trucks like these are common around here, most can be had for 5-800 bucks.
http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/cto/2727602432.html - For the money this is a nice truck. Short bed, reg cab 5.7 with AC. Would be a nice one to start with. Probably get it for 500 bucks.
http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/2711163109.html - This is a 2500 4x4 that you could drive home for less than a grand.
http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/cto/2710718549.html - Chances are this is a 4.3 but it is a 5 speed and would make an awesome base for an LS w/6 speed swap.
http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/cto/2743278229.html - I am thinking about looking at this one this week. I could use an extended cab.

Something I never care about when buying these things is the condition of the engine. If it is a 5.7 then they are literally laying around everywhere and people are selling them for nothing. I've sold good running high mileage TBI motors for 200 bucks. It it is a 4.3 or a 5.0, put a 5.7 in it and get it over with. You can use any SBC in them so if you have an old 283, 327, 350, etc laying around then they will work. If you want to keep TBI, just swap the heads out.
