I have a 1994 K1500 with a 5.7 and a 5 speed. How can I tell which trans it has, so I can get the right amount and kind of fluid because I'd like to change it.

I had a factory NV4500 in a 1995 K1500 RCSB truck, so it depends on how it was ordered. If it has 6 bolt PTO covers on each side, it’s an NV4500. It not, it’s probably an NV3500.

NV3500 = synchromesh

NV4500 = gear oil

The possibility of having an NV4500 in a half ton from the factory is not likely.

I have one in mine, but that’s because I swapped to it after inihilating three NV3500’s.

The 3500 can handle barely more than 300ft lbs of torque, whereas the 4500 can handle 450ft lbs of torque.

I thought the NV4500's used a special fluid as well.

NV4500s need a GL4 oil. They have ceramic synchronizers that will corrode with any other kind of oil in it.

Costs about a hundred bucks to change the fluid.

NV3500s look completely different. Just google image each transmission and what you have in yours will be pretty obvious. Also, if first gear isn't a granny (rock crawling) gear, then you have an NV3500.

I don't think it's GL4 that makes it special.... there's lots of GL4 oils. It's my understanding that there are only 3 oils to use on those, the GM stuff, the Dodge stuff which is usually slightly cheaper, or the Castrol stuff.

I've always heard carbon fiber, not ceramic, but same idea. I hear rebuilds get brass, and then they don't shift as nicely.

Well the T56 didn't get carbon syncros until the C5 Corvette debuted, so in my mind it's doubtful that a truck preceded that but I have been wrong before.
