steering column swap HELP!!! beeded

I'm having trouble joining the steering column in my 89 with the donor out of my 92 parts truck. Everything lines up right and all the measurements are the same but I can not get the shaft on the column to join into the sleeve on the steering shaft under the hood. Its like I need to make the sleeve expand back toward the firewall to make the 2 ends join and bolt together. Is there a way to do this or another trick?

You cannot get the steering shaft to slide enough to reach the column? Is that what you are running into or cannot get the sleve on the column enough to get the bolt through? Tried hammering on it some?

I do belive there is a keyway so shafts will only join in one spot.
