I agree that they bare narrow. But I also have skinny tire on it. They are 215/85R16. So they are pretty skinny. When I had the old steel wheels and 225/75 it looked wider. I bought these tires because I got 6 of them (cooper discoverer hit) for $100.

There are several reasons why it's designed that way.

One of the primary ones is so it oversteers when it lets go at the limit of it's traction instead of understeering.

Oversteer is reasonably easy to recover from. Understeer is very, very bad and you're going for one very nasty ride....
