I went to a lot of work modifying cheap ebay headers to fit my 97 k3500/L29. Now I'm having doubts. Do headers burn up all the wiring and plumbing in sight, cook the floor and firewall, overheat the starter, etc?

I have a set of hooker 2462 long tubes and it's no where near the starter. What sucks I over time they dry out spark plug wires.
I don't like the placement of the 02 sensor on these though.

Are you running long tubes?

They do get hot that's for sure. I've never had a problem with my full length Hedmans on my 91 C1500, but I made sure the spark plug wires were kept away. Never noticed a starter issue, but definitely the floor. I did do a bit of normal Dynamat on the floor, did notice a difference.

Engine compartment heat increases with headers.

Never noticed a difference with under-floor heat. Lotsa folks have starter problems with headers, which means they had starter issues or wiring issues before the header install. Headers make starter issues show up.

Headers CANNOT "burn up" wiring unless you're careless about how the wires are routed. The exception is spark-plug wires; and the solution is heat-shielding (metal or high-temp fabric.)
