Depends on the year model truck. 96-2000 you have to loosen up the ac compressor/power steering bracket and slide it forward to remove the driverside cover. Other years might have to remove some of the accessory brace brackets.

You can finesse it out of there without removing anything major. Drivers side you may need to remove the vacuum booster pipe on the intake. Bend the brackets on the back of the head out of the way, unclip the wire loom clips on the passenger side of the intake and get those out of the way. Be mindful of any connectors when moving the harness. Don’t want to stress any wires or connections.

Take your time, it’s not a bad job to do whenever the time comes. :)

Definitely take the negative cable off of the battery before .....

edit////Since I'm obsessed with checking my lifter preload,I went ahead and made a quick video of how I remove the valve covers...
