I'll amplify that. It's a GREAT system, at one time near-universal on "American" cars.In general, the Duo-Servo system is a good working set-up.
The star wheel assembly can seize, when it does the lever that turns it will wear the teeth right off the star wheel. May wear a divot in the lever as well.Perhaps the most common problem is if the threaded halves of the star-wheel get dirty/corroded so that they don't turn freely.
When that happens the lever that turns the star-wheel in increments just rides over the wheel without doing any adjustment.
Fortunately, most all of that stuff was standard aftermarket fodder, and probably still is. OTOH, there's lots of aftermarket parts that I thought would never be discontinued, and they are going away or the quality is so poor that they're unusable. "Everything changes" and not always for the better.
Even plain ol' white grease works fine. It's important that the internal/external threads are clean, and have a bit of brake lube on them.
Another issue with duo-servo brakes on the rear, is when some doofus tightens the park brake cable BEFORE adjusting the service brakes. The park brake gets over-tightened, then the shoes don't rest on the anchor pin when the brakes are not applied. After that, NOTHING works right until the park brake cable is loosened, the service brakes properly adjusted, and then the park brake properly tightened.
