    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Finally got my frame and parts back! Turned out absolutely perfect. Now to get some suspension and steering parts so I can make it a rolling chassis again.

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Not a whole lot to update right now, still waiting for my frame to get done which was supposed to be done 3 weeks ago... Engine is basically done and ready to put in once it gets here. For now, i've been finishing my turbo build on my 93 Formula to keep me occupied lol.

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Been a minute since i've updated... Been waiting on parts then I had to wait for warmer weather to get some painting done, then I broke my arm so that slowed things down... Because of who I am as a person, I couldn't bring myself to use the original crusty CP3 injection pump so I ordered a...

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Another small update. Decided to bite the bullet on head studs, but I went with KB Diesel over ARP, $650+ for studs is just stupid... But I got the heads on and started getting the valvetrain cleaned up and installed.

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Hoping I can get some less boring updates here soon lol. Cold weather and house projects take a toll on some of this but hoping soon I can get out and finish cleaning up the frame and getting that ready for blasting and powdercoat within the next month or so.

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Well, a small update. Got my new rod bearings and cap bolts, I pulled the pistons back out to reclean everything then re-assembled. Spins MUCH easier with the bearings oriented correctly... With that, I could FINALLY move on to getting the bottom end buttoned up, timing gears installed, oil...

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Well... Minor setback. Feel like i'm getting nowhere on this engine. I mentioned above that the engine was turning over way too hard, infact it was locked up once the last rod was torqued down and clearly that's an issue. So I pulled a few caps and noticed a few of the bearings were scored...

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Kinda slow progress but got further on the shortblock. Finally got my parts washer cleaned out and some fresh fluid in it so I could clean up the rods and pistons. That all went well but I tell you what, never building an engine in a non climate controlled garage again. Every time I turn on my...

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

In this case I simply cleaned it up with a wire brush, let it soak in muriatic acid for about 20 minutes, rinsed in distilled water then put it in. Eventually I want an abrasive tumbler to do that then probably still etch with acid and rinse. I could have also used my power supply to do rust...

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

That's where i'm at for now. Finally got my parts washer cleaned out and a new pump so i can clean up the cam, rods, pistons, and lifters, then move forward with assembly. My heads should be done at the machine shop soon which will be about right on time. Probably take a break for a bit to...

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Small update. Been a little busy but been prepping the block for assembly and measuring all my bearings clearances which has been a pain.... I think the up and down temperatures have been messing with my measurements since I don't have a climate controlled garage and we're talking tiny numbers...

Picked up my block and crank yesterday. Now the assembly can begin! Can see the sleeve install here.

Also test fit the replacement tank crossmember. Surprisingly fit very well, was worried with it being Dorman.

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Spent last night dropping my mockup block and 6L90 in. Dropped right in and fits perfectly. Once I convert this to 4WD, I will be able to use the factory mount and everything. The mount ended up about 1/2" forward but luckily the stock crossmember has notches and enough room for the...

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Got my rear spring hangers, shackles, and rear tank brace in. Decided to replace that brace also, it's not rotted out but it's got some good pitting and just looks ugly so I figured why not.

Oh also got a peek at my LB7 block, should hopefully be done soon!

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Got a good amount of stuff done this weekend, started working on getting the frame stripped down. This thing being a quintessential farm rig, it had some pretty janky brackets welded on the rear frame rails along with that ultra sketchy gooseneck plate, so those were the first to go. Guessing...

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Not as bad as you would think. My uncle just had his 81 K10 frame done along with a few other random parts and I believe the total was around $700. Another place i've used in town but they're not as good was $400 for a frame.

Yes, have an excellent local powder coater who does large industrial parts. He's done some work for me in the past.

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

So basically from here, I need to get the frame stripped down and ready for the sand blaster. I'll have to get the rear spring hangers ordered along with new leaf springs and front suspension components at minimum so I can get it back to rolling once it comes back from the powder coater. I do...

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Then got the drive train out of the frame, MUCH easier with the cab off lol. Discovered the poor big block was locked up so I had to pull the converter out with the motor. Was able to get the bolts with a wrench at least. I tell you what though... the previous owners clearly didn't care about...

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Well I got the white cab stripped of everything I need except the rear window, have to cut that out yet. Pulling the carpet revealed even MORE reasons i'm glad I gave up on this cab.... rust rust and MORE rust. In the seams, in the B pillars everywhere... not worth the time at all. Had to cut...

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

My 6L90 finally showed up! Need to swap the output shaft and housing so I can use my transfer case. Haven't totally decided which route to take... I can either have this shaft re-splined to the regular 32 spline (this has a large 36 spline output) so I can use my BW case or I can just use a...

    1996 GMC K3500 Dually Build

Got it mostly gutted yesterday so now I need to get my white cab gutted completely, get it off the frame and out of here, then i'll set my red cab on a homemade cart my uncle built and keep it off to the side for the time being so I can get a test fit on the engine/trans, THEN strip the frame...
