    It's a 94 K1500, someone had swapped in a built 350 vortec motor with an aftermarket vortec TBI intake but the engine was in bad shape when we got it. The previous owner said it had "oversized injectors" on it, but there was so much wrong that I don't really know whether to believe him or not...

    How many, and which, pins does the code scanner actually use? For OBD1, would it just use the data stream pin or pins?     Regular old OBD1 rectangle ALDL. When you turn the key on, without starting the engine, the ABS light comes on for a minute then goes off. The check gages light comes on and stays on. Nothing else comes on at any point, running or not.
