Hello All- New here with a new project!

Back on the road! Took the used engine on a solid shakedown run tonight after resealing everything. Ran it hard- Hot idle holds at 20psi, cruises at 40psi, and 55psi when it kicks down on 5w30 full synthetic. Runs like a champ. I'm currently regretting not replacing the timing chain while it was...

    Slight knock?

There was also a TSB I think I remember reading a long time ago that also when I was concerned about this very noise that discussed having to measure and replace main bearings in .001 sizes to correct a bottom end knock (I'm 90% was warranty complaint related)...dont recall the details exactly...

    Slight knock?

I've owned three of these. All of them had a slight bottom end knock on cold starts. First one had 349k when sold...ran the dogpoo out of it. My dad is still driving one with 250k. I'm currently replacing engine in the third after discovering poor quality rebuild after pulling apart to do head...

    Best Intake gaskets

I doubt they last also, but gonna give the benefit of the doubt for now...the fiber gasket seems like the way to go on them with sufficient torque. That'll be perfect timing to build a nice little "eco-boost" 5.3 for it. I'll update here and in my project thread when they fail... I've had two...

    Best Intake gaskets

I'd agree- not an optimal bolted joint design. Guessing they prioritized clampload of the coolant passages when they went to vortec heads which likely had a little more heat in them. Seems like they used the composite gasket to allow for some flex in the aluminum. Ended up using the Mahle...

    Best Intake gaskets

I know this is a couple year old post, but I wanted to point out a potential issue when using the 1255s for anyone who stumbles on this thread like I did... After a lot of research on what to use on my project, I bought a set of 1255s because it seemed like the logical choice when evaluating...

Hello All- New here with a new project!

Forward progress! Engine is back in. Taking some time to repair the tape and cor-tube on the harness as I go...its fairly brittle. Currently at a standstill while I wait on parts. Hoping to have it back on the road next weekend.

Hello All- New here with a new project!

I can only imagine...LS EcoBoost! Without the Eco. Just seems like a good idea. You still get the more modern (but aging) FI system, economy, reliability, and power of the LS, and as much power as you want when you plant your foot in it. Loads of real estate to pull it off too.

Hello All- New here with a new project!

Updates- After teardown of my peanut-butter filled "original" engine and over-analyzing a boatload of options (LS swap, crate l31, smeding 383, etc) I picked up a new-to-me L31 from a 2500 last week with 150k miles. Seemed to run great...no knocks or smoke and compression galore. Giving it a...

    Smeding Performance 383 in a 97 C1500

I ask because I'm considering their short block and there isn't a lot of folks out there that have left many reviews. The last couple years have been unkind to engine prices.... Getting dang near unaffordable. Local shop quoted $7500 to completely rebuild my L31. I can get a new L31 long block...

Hello All- New here with a new project!

Alright- at a crossroads and need some input/advice. I've got my tree-fiddy torn down. Bare minimum shes gonna need heads, bearing set, gaskets, crank polish, etc. Its had a recent rebuild as there is no discernible ring ridge, etc and its 30 over. Rebuilder pistons sit in the hole at TDC...

Hello All- New here with a new project!

I also left out that it had the crappy plastic intake gaskets that came apart in pieces when I took it apart. Also very little torque if any on the front two intake bolts...all of the coolant passages were full of stop leak...guessing more likely than not that intake gasket was the problem

Hello All- New here with a new project!

Well the more I'm digging into this, the shortblock is in pretty good shape. It looks to have been recently rebuilt. 030 over and some possible journal work or rebuilder crank...seems to measure 3.520 on the stroke with about a .028 quench. It's super clean overall. All of the cylinders still...

    My 98 Chevy 1500 With 454 7.4L Swap

how is the performance of the truck with the 454 vs 350? Whats the "seat of the pants" feel? Any MPG data? Worse or better than you thought?

Hello All- New here with a new project!

Welp, got some motivation to work on the project. Bad news... no sign of leaking intake gaskets. Also signs of copper leak stop so guessing the old girl had some secrets. Anyone need any peanut butter? Time to make some decisions...SBC vs LS. I have a perfect LM7 donor for this that owes me...

Hello All- New here with a new project!

Houston, we have a problem... Took the project out yesterday to wash the dust off and let it run... Checked the oil- over full. Checked the coolant. Empty. Runs fine-ish. Gonna change intake gaskets to start...we will see...

Hello All- New here with a new project!

Sewlow- I appreciate your experience in this reply... Slowly getting back to this truck after another project jumped in front of this one...bought a boat (I pull it with a 1500, so I think this is relevant topic ) As a trimmer, you'll have to rate my work as a first timer...bought a sewing...

Weathertech digital fit floor liners for GMT400 trucks!

Going with the black. WeatherTech has a trim to fit for the rear I'm going to pick up (part w25). Black gives it some contrast and matches some of the dash. Good enough for who its for! We have light tan in our van and once they scuff, you see it forever.

Weathertech digital fit floor liners for GMT400 trucks!

Grey and Black showed up today. Selected 1998 Suburban on WeatherTechs site. Wanted to see if there was a snowballs chance the second row would fit the rear of my extended cab... It didn't no matter how you flip it. Fronts fit pretty good. My truck does have rear floor vents, so I expected the...

Weathertech digital fit floor liners for GMT400 trucks!

I know this is an old thread, but I just ordered the K1500 suburban front and rear Weathertech mats for my truck. I bought both grey and black to figure out which one I wanted for my grey interior and plan to return what I dont use. Ill post images of both once I get them. Leaning toward black...

Hello All- New here with a new project!

Mine will be around for awhile too. I travel a bit for work and did a job out in Montana and was in awe of the condition of old trucks. I started looked on Marketplace out that way and found mine. I paid $5500 for it, anticipating that Id put $5k in it to get it where I want it. That number now...

Hello All- New here with a new project!

Red is an eye catcher! You have a nice ride too. These are tough to find anymore. The road salt is one thing, but the brine they put down days before storms creeps in everywhere and rots from the inside out. I've found that the Northwest is the place to go for more of the rust free examples. I...
