I am planning my engine rebuild right now. I have been for a while...
I think the best bang for the buck would be a vortec 350, roller rocker arms, and an upgraded holly throttle body... however, the vortec heads are not set up for TBI and the EGR valve....

Question is if anyone has successfully deleted their EGR before and how. Does it actually help MPG or would I be % 100 right in getting rid of it to do this build?

I've never deleted mine so I can't comment directly, however I've read in several places that fuel mileage will go down slightly if you do. Also as a side note, I seem to remember a recent thread on here where someone was very disappointed with the Holley throttle bodies, perhaps someone else can add to that.

I am going to make an aluminum block off plate what will go between the gasket of the intake manifold and the EGR. The egr makes the intake manifold very dirty to the point where eventually the egr ports will become completely clogged with carbon. I cleaned mine out twice now since I had to redo my intake manifold gaskets about 20k after my 1st attempt and there was already a carbon build up starting. I don't think you will loose much mpg, you will again some hp though.

Any significant mods to the engine and you'll want custom tuning anyway; deleting EGR function is trivial at that point.

i just made a block off plate on all the ones ive done and then gone into the computer and turned it off real quick. um with vortec heads go with a carb intake and adapter and just mod your tb the holley ones are crappy. i mean i have alot of mods done to my truck, so its not relatively stock to a vortec or tbi motor but still average 12.5-13 mpg

doing more research i would need to "re-chip" the truck's computer... even if i put in a more aggressive cam i would need to re-chip... so this option is now off the table....

i either put in a %100 stock engine with mild improvements like a holly TBI, roller rockers, and headers.... or i totally replace everything including the fuel system and computer....

rollers wont do a thing unless you have a cam, theyll just be noisier, stock rockers will be fine so no point really. you don tneed to touch fuel system much on a built motor, mine made 370 to the rear and all i did was up to a tpi pump and redid my stock 350 tb. holley tbis are garbage, if your that worried about more air get a 454 one and use the adapter plug for the iac. chips arent hard, you can get a non datalogged chip done for about 100 bucks.

For more CFM even better to get a modified small block TBI than swap to a big block TBI; they can be had reasonably enough from RV Morse. I wouldn't bother though unless other mods had been made that might actually require more airflow through the TBI. Not trying to be an ass about it but sounds like OP just wants to spend money to make it feel like the truck has more power, without a solid plan for actually making more power. :(

By the way, practically anything you do that might be worthwhile, will very likely cause you to fail California smog check.
