On that note, what is a reasonable price range to expect shelling out for the set up?

Not to hijack but I'm entertaining ths

Expect around $1500 - $2000 for a 91-94 or 96+ trans, bellhousing and 4wd tailshaft housing. Slightly less for a 2wd tailshaft. 1995 4wd NV4500 is the goldmine trans. Whatever the seller wants they can get.

Thats why I say if you can find a rusty donor truck the seller probably wont know what the trans is worth.

95 has the external slave bellhousing of the earlier years but has the later closer ratio gearing and updated shift tower of the later years. Some people prefer the early gearing, others the later years. You can put a 92-94 trans in a 95 with no issues though. It’s harder to put a 96-up into the earlier trucks

FWIW, I got a 92 model (4x4) with a PTO on it for $1200, with super low miles. Maybe a tad more than I wanted to pay, but I think it was worth it. If you’re patient the right deal will come up.
