my has both lines at the front. Which one would need to be extended
Transmission outlet to cooler inlet plumbing is the same.

Cooler outlet to transmission inlet changed, newer trans have the return going to the rear. The "cooled" fluid is what lubricates the gears 'n' bushings.

Awesome thats good to know they didnt suffer major changes with its interchangeablity like the 4l60e did over its life
There were some minor internal production changes in '99, '01 and '03. Nothing major. Only important if you are buying parts for a rebuild.

Otherwise, 97-07 (vans used them until 2012?) or whenever they stopped running them are pretty much the same.

Thanks thats good too know since ive seen alot of later 4l80 forsale cheaper then the older ones

So from what I’m gathering is; I should be able to run an 80 up to 06-07 in my 97 1ton without any issues other than extending one of the lines

I wonder if you need to do the wire patch at the ECU from the GM TSB that helps the shifting? My 96 K2500 needed it.

Assuming we're talking about the same TSB, I believe that only applies to '96 PCMs. And I think only 4L60E trucks, but I could be wrong.
