This about all i know, but i hope it Help. Ok so There's Hypertech tbi chips that's about 167 at jegs.com then there's the Jet stage one and stage two there about the same price as the hypertech chip. Ive been looking at chips myself for a long time and I think I'm going to get the Jet stage two chip! But I'm planning on doing my own testing on it to see if there's any change in power and mpg.
Here's some links

Without any real mods (intake, cam, heads, ect) your not going to see any real gains with a chip. But when you do start modding it you can't get your full potential without having a chip burned (new one if you already have one).

To add to this... In order to get the true potential out of your system you need to match your tune to your upgrades. A generic chip is just that. Its ment to work with the most common upgrades like air intake manifolds, headers, up graded exhaust, maybe a higher fuel pressure. If you intend on doing more than that such as a cam, heads, more Cubic Inches, then you will need either a custome chip that can be retuned and burned easily or you need a programmable ECM. I use the programmable ECM. I am using the EBL Flash from Dynamic EFI. Its easily programed and comes with the stock tune to start out with. It has self learning capability and data logging as well. I am getting 19 MPG (average of city and highway) with a mostly stock engine. On that engine I have a bored out TB from CFM-Tech, 1 5/8 inch headers, no cat and supper 44 mufflers as upgrades on that truck. You can do what ever you want with that ECM, like programming out the EGR, add a vacuum reference fuel pressure regulator. All you need is a lap top and tuning software. You can get free software called Tuner Pro. I use that software and it works great for free software. The cost for the ECM is $430 and is very easy to install with very little electical experience (but if you dont have any at all, then have someone that does help).

what about experience with tuning engines?
sounds tricky for someone like me who doesnt know anything about that, or do you just enter what you have and it does the complicated stuff for you?

There is some things you'll have to learn to be able to tune your truck, but Bob is all about helping people out. There's a write up on how to do it as well on there site. It's not as bad as it looks and once you get the hang of it, the EBL is a very capable ECM.

Don't use any generic mass produced chip. Those companies charge alot for a chip that hardly does anything. My suggestion is get a custom chip or an EBL. I like the idea of the EBL myself because if you change something on your truck, you can modify your settings. But if you order chips, you'll Have to buy it again. And it'll never be as perfect.
