It would probably be easier just to get a smoked one off eBay with the LEDs built in. Also make sure when you buy one that it does have the black connector at the end of the wires! Because the factory wires have two that go to the brake light and one white wire to each cargo light. I bought a smoked light from some other website and sure enough it only had a red and black wire for the brake light and nothing else. I ended up selling it and waiting until something else came along.

That's good info, but I want to be able to pump as much light into the cargo area as possible when I need it. Is that thing much brighter than the stock lights? (It looks sharper than stock unit, I'll give you that!)

I think I may have found the perfect product:

http://www.oznium.com/diamond-led-strip

Freakishly bright and 11.5" long (3rd brake light is 12" long), and because the strip is only 2.6mm wide, I could stack several together in the housing. The best part is each strip puts out 350 lumens....much more than previously mentioned LEDs

WOW those are real small, smd leds are BRIGHT - my flashlight uses them! I don't see that they make red ones though

The trick now is finding a housing! There's premade led 3rd brake lights on eBay but all I need is the outside plastic piece so I can do the internals myself. I'd rather not drop $50 on a light just to tear it apart...

Well unfortunately it's going to have to happen, whether you hack up your stocker or buy one to hack up

you can make custom led boards with red and white using perforated board (bread board), resistors, and flux LEDs.

examples:

Thanks for that link, it's a tempting option.....

I'm thinking about taking the stock housing, removing the red and clear plastic piece and putting in a piece of plexiglass. The trick is making it look good.....and weather resistant
