strange noises are normal
If you were dead set on keeping a automatic, my trans and transfer case would be a good start to build one. The trans has alot of upgrades already installed. It just needs a rebuild. If you end up wanting it, pm me. Btw, a little steel reinforced epoxy (quick steel, im not crazy on jb weld) would fix the one you have. As long as its bolted up properly, thats not a part that sees alot of stress. If you end up in my area, i may would just sell you that housing off mine, it is no use to me anymore.
