Awesome. here is my question! and thanks a bunch!

1996 F150, Cranks awhile to start and VERY bad MPG

im currently am daily driving a 1996 F150, 302, 5-speed.

Engine is Stock, other then exhasut, But i have some problems

1. Engine takes awhile to start, have to sit there and crank it over for awhile, starts faster with foot to the floor. has never NOT started and the smell of fuel is strong

2. Gets VERY bad MPG, like 10MPG, I dont understand why.

Engine has had the following replaced within the last 15,000KM

Fuel Pump
Idle Air Control Motor
EGR Valve
Fuel Press Regulator
All o2 Sensors
Fuel Filter
Plugs
Cap/Rotor

Once it has started the truck drives great, no sputtering and very strong through whole RPM band.

Thoughts?

sounds like it is running rich. when you step on the throttle, the tps tells the pcm to change the fuel ratio to richen the mixture. when the engine is first started the pcm is in open loop and it adjust fuel mixture by recieving signals from certain sensors, maf, cts etc. when the engine gets to operating temperature it goes into closed loop and adjust air /fuel ratio according to what the o2 tells it. the accelerator is just a valve for air and fuel to go through. it should be called air pedal cause that is what it is. the coolant temp sensor tells the pcm to richen the mixture in closed loop or when the engine is cold. it will lean out when it warms up.

So what would you suggest replacing? the TPS and CTS?

you can test the cts by removing it and put it in a pot of water and raise the temp, then get an ohmmeter and watch the resistance. it should decrease as temp rises. if not or it says OL. replace it. the tps should be fine the symptoms of a bad tps is you can press the accelerator and as your pressing it there will be a flat spot where the the engine will stumble or die depends.

alldata is an online automotive manual (or you can by the discs) it has 1980-2011 vehicles import and domestic european. it has specs, wiring diagrams, exploded views of components, electrical connector views, testing procedures everything.
