I have a 95' SCLB 4x4 with a 305 (has full exhaust, msd cap rotor wires ect) and a 5-speed with what Im assuming are 3.42 gears and I have 35" wranglers on it and Its a freaking DOG! You have to wind the h*ll out of it to get anywhere. On the freeway going up any sort of grade (any more than 5% or so) I have to downshift to 4th, and I truly have to work to keep it at 70 on any road. It seems like in 5th the lighter I am on the pedal the faster it will go, but if you floor it it motor doesnt act oddly other than not moving any faster, if anything I lose speed. Am I crazy or is this normal?

A 305, 3.42s and 35's don't equal a race truck haha!

I remember once seeing a spotless 2wd rcsb 5 speed with a 305 I knew for certain I was going to buy...
Until I drove it. Lol it was painfully slow. My father's 2wd 4.3 would have walked off and left it.

3.73's will wake it up! Especially with those 35's. That'll put the engine back around the rpm's it rev'd at with the original sized tires. That's a pretty tall & heavy tire for those gears.
305's are...well...ahhh...305's!
4200rpm & they're starting to run outa breath. You CAN do stuff to 'em, but it'll cost you the same as building a 350, which would give you a better bang for the buck.

Either that, or drop in a BBC or LS! Have to move up to an NV4500 with those, though.

I believe the truck has a 4500, but ill have to double check. Thanks guys, I might play with the timing and slap one of my holley TB's on it for now with a spacer and save for gears!

gears will do more than anything without swapping motors, your not gonna get alot of power out of a tbi 305. 305 is a great engine, i love them in a car, but for a truck or anything heavier its a no go. they are fun motors to play with in something small where you can rev the piss out of it and so forth tbi and truck just dont enter that equation at all.

I can’t speak on the 305, but have experience with the 5 speeds. I have a 454 truck with a five speed. One thing about those transmissions, at least on my truck, that people forget is that 5th is actually an overdrive. So hitting the wrong grade at too low of a speed or RPM in “5th”, will result in having to downshift. That’s a highway gear.
