Just get an edelbrock intake for a 96+ Vortec and put the Fitech or Holly TBI on it. The Fitech works really good. I run a dual plane. The Fitech corrects the fuel mixture at idle so your not running stupid rich. Some say EFI doesn't like a dual plane but I think it's hear say. Mine works just fine. My truck is currently down. I had to replace shocks which ended up in replacing U/L control arms and all steering components. Should get my press Friday so I can press in polyurethane bushings. Engine bay is all cleaned up since this pic was taken but give you an idea.

... because the sensors in the OEM manifold were needed and related to other parts of its operation.

Blackbear tunes factory ecms the Fitech uses its own ECM. Have you considered a marine vortec intake? Gives you external replaceable injectors that your stock ECM can run. Or a 411 ECM also. Dubs has a factory tbi truck and I don't see a trans dipstick so it might be a manual transmission.

Yeah, that's kinda the route I am thinking - marine intake. Essentially, I have no emissions concerns, just need parts that paly nice together and are not too deep off the custom one off chart.

So the factory intake is good to 400(ish) hp - right? I think I'm just going to keep it simple here. Wrong year to mess with unless I go LS swap and I'm proly not going that direction. This was just a toy that I'm playing with and dont need the monster HP in it. Heads, cam, exhuast, tune and call it good. Keep the resale potential as well cause I tend to change my hobbies like my underwear. I have a set of Edelbrock 2.02/1.60 aluminum heads that I'll use (60985). Prolly pick up a Monster 4l60E trans that should handle some increased HP - 10" converter, Free flowing exhaust and a posi. Any recommendations on Cam??

Kind of hard to recommend something when there is no intended purpose for the vehicle. 5.53 gearing is way low, unless you are running 40" rubber.

Unless you have larger cubic inches, the E-tec 170's are a better fit. More torque down low where you need it in a street application, leaving very little on the table compared to the 200's, unless you are 383-406+ cubes.... and then you will run into problems with the factory injection and intake.

E-tec 170's are good to .575 lift, but that doesn't mean you need that much. .500-.540 lift is plenty for a street application, and will result in a longer valve train life, due to lower seat pressures. In all cases, you need to ensure the seat and open pressures will be adequate for your particular camshaft.

Unless you plan on spinning this engine to 7500+ rpm, you would likely want something like the LT4 hot cam kit for a 'hot' street driver, with even a bit more duration that I would like to see.

There are a few people that have builds in the 400 hp range with the stock poppet injectors, however they are pushing the limit for duty cycle and getting close to lean at WOT, high load.

With that being said, a black box computer can be reprogrammed, or you can re-pin the harness and use a 0411, each and every year has a different pin out. There is a member on this board who can help you in that regards, Lextech.

His only request is that you do not reproduce, post, or disseminate in any way, shape or form his spreadsheet that he will provide to you free of charge.

Justin at Blackbear can help you out with the tune, using the factory black box computer, or set you up with a custom tune on the 0411, using factory intake and injectors. EGR can be tuned out if you wish.

Monster transmission, you can do much better than that, for less money.

Your local rebuilder can help out here, with quality parts, Sonnax Sure cure, larger boost valve, Transgo HD2 kit, etc. One of the members here can also help out.

As far as a converter, no need to go to a 10" converter... this is not a drag truck, is it? Get a Dacco converter for an S10, it has a slightly higher stall speed, and will work better with a 'mildly' built engine and is likely a lot less expensive.

Transmission tuning will need to be addressed, you can have some, or all of the torque management turned off in the tuning of the PCM.

thanks michael. my mistake on the gears, its 3.53:1 (fat finger lol). appreciate the input. considering i am not getting to wild with and most likely keeping the stock intake i do see a need to remove any emissions that dont pay out in hp. also not shooting for high rpm at this point so i dont think the 411 would bring much to the table?

0411 = much faster processor and more 'tune friendly'. Some users have reported much better idle, better economy and more power over the same engine combination than the black box. Not many tuners support the black box, but support for the 0411 computer is widespread.

If you have a base tune that runs on the 0411, autocal may be the ticket for you. Drive the vehicle, datalogging, then upload the data to the tuner, who will then email you a new tune based on the parameters while driving, that you load yourself.
