Just wondering if anyone with a 5.7 TBI in their OBS has swapped their stock air cleaner assembly that runs from the passenger front fender to the throttle body for a standard aftermarket unit such as a Edelbrock lid, filter and can unit ?
And if you did
Does it get enough airflow ?
Did it effect engine temps (temp gauge readings) ?
Did it effect your engine performance ?
Did it effect fuel mileage ?

Reason I'm asking is I'm looking into swapping my stock assembly but would prefer a basic unit that don't require an oiled filter.

I haven't done that, but if you want something thats not stock maybe you should add another snorkle to your air cleaner. Grant on FSC did it to his and so did Gr8twhite.
Or another idea would be to swap to a 454 aircleaner.

Thanks for your response but I'm really not looking to add another snorkle.

I more interested in installing something like a Hypertech 4001 TBI Power Charger with a basic dual stud air cleaner lid and standard paper element air filter.

Just not to sure if that set up would be effective.

I have swapped probably 20 of these truck to a single stud and regular open element, and from my experience, a little power gain, much more sound when you get in to the throttle, no effect on gas mileage at all up or down, I have had no adverse effect's from this at all. Now I am sure a true cold air intake would be better, but a simple air cleaner swap to an open element type is simple and looks clean.

Something else I always do is to do away with the crank case vent tube that routes to underneath the breather, I run a simple crank case filter that pop's in the valve cover. The original grommet on the valve cover is too small for the breather though, so you have to get another pcv grommet for the driver's side valve cover, it will be the same as the pass. side, and then get a universal push in crankcase breather for a 3/4 in grommet, Autozone carries a chrome mister gasket one on the shelf. You can't run the normal size crankcase breather that all the parts stores carry though they are made to fit in a 1.22in. hole like what's in an aftermarket valve cover, the original valve cover's hole is not big enough to put that size breather or grommet in. Then you can either cap the port on the air cleaner riser or just do away with it completely and set the breather directly on the throttle body, I usually do the second one. Doing this drasticly cut's down on the carbon build up inside the throttle body and I am sure the intake as well.

I've got a powercharger on my truck. I also added dynamat to it and to the bottom of the aircleaner. I also got rid of the silencer and added a JEGs air tube.

SuperStepside---- no, there's no throttlebody spacer. It's all stock under my hood except the plug wires & distrib. cap

Draggin95------ What parts did you use when swapping the dual stud to a single stud ?
I'm not concerned with power gains but I certainly don't want to lose any power.
I'm more **ole skool** and prefer the simple lid, filter, pan style setup.
My stock valve covers only have the hole for the PCV Valve in the passenger side cover.

95C/1500------shoot some pics my way of your setup if you don't mind.

Hello, the only part you need for the stud is, the single stud itself, I have gotten some from the junkyard and some from the chevy dealership new, even new they are cheap, you need a stud for a 88-92, all the injector tree's have the threads for the single stud all they way through 95, and just remove th other two stud's, the stud you need has a bend in it so that it's centered in the middle. As far as power you will gain a little, def. won't lose any, and I like the simple look too. About the valve cover I just meant that you need the same grommet as the passenger side already has for the pcv valve.
