Is it worth it to have a custom made dual inlet air cleaner on a TBI truck? Basically the exact set but another one flipped upside down and going to the drivers fender too? Would it allow the engine to breath better or does it get enough with the stock inlet on the passenger side

Stock one is sufficient, you would do better by upgrading the filter and intake tubing itself. Use a smooth, composite intake tubing and a good quality cotton filter. If it is still there, remove the hot air diverter gate and cap the hole that the hot air tube plugs into. That is the biggest intake bottle neck that you have. I've personally been using a round K&N intake for over 200k miles and it has been excellent. Never replaced it, just cleaned and re-oiled. There is an obvious difference in engine sound when using a nice oiled cloth filter. If you have ever driven an early 80s GM truck with a properly tuned Quadrajet and romped on it to open up the rear butterflies, that is the sound you get with an oiled cloth filter on a TBI engine. A deeper, more pronounced exhaust note even using stock exhaust. I get irritated with the whistle that also comes with the oiled filters but it is only noticeable when maintaining a constant low RPM.

I have already ditched the inlet tract and replaced it with a 4" diameter PVC pipe which goes directly into the inner fender. Do you ever wonder if sucking in hot underhood air decreases your HP by a slight amount?

You can take the flap out of the stock housing and cover the whole with alum tape.

Well then the next step is to get a hypertech powercharger or make one from a salad bowl and cut your housing to fit it.

I looked into one of those last summer but never bought one. I was going to make one but I got busy and never found the proper salad bowl to do the mod. Maybe I will look into it again. Is it really worth the effort to make one?

I bought one, not make one, prob wouldnt be hard to make and I took a torch to the stock housing to open up to the diameter of the bowl.

I know I cold make one but I just dont have the time. I will just pay the $40 and be done with it. Its not worth my time to go loking for a bowl and then modify it. I am also using a stock style Fram filter which Im sure some will same sucks. I dont have anything else to compare too though

Nah, the increased intake ability makes up for it. Plus, when at speed, the under-hood temp isn't much higher than fender temps. What with the fan and passing air. I wouldn't have used the set-up I have but I already had it from an old mud truck. It is about a $250 set of filters, not something an old TBI motor needed. One thing to avoid at all costs is a metal intake tract. Your 4" smooth bore PVC pipe is absolutely ideal. A better filter will help a little but probably not as much as you would like for the cost(most oiled cotton filters are $80 and up).
