    Is my TH400 dying?

Thanks @Schurkey for the response. If you were closer I’d swing by so you could test drive lol. Any suggestions on what to look at engine wise while Ive got it inside checking the transmission?

    Is my TH400 dying?

interesting read. I was leaning towards a bad TC. I will have a closer look at the Vacuum lines and see if I can pinpoint the VRV. Thanks @618 Syndicate

    Is my TH400 dying?

@618 Syndicate Thank you - appreciate the info and video. Yep I would say it’s flaring, occasionally 2-3 time prior to shifting.

    Is my TH400 dying?

@618 Syndicate thanks for the reply. TBH I read up on previous posts and Im not sure about terminology. It sounds like it though. While maintaining constant throttle it surges speed (300 RPM) until I apply more pressure and the truck shifts. But at higher speeds it does not. Is this what you...

    Is my TH400 dying?

Hey All, 1988 GMC C3500 RCSW. Truck has 91KMS 5.7L TH400. Recent tune up; plugs, wires, cap, distributor. Truck runs ok but recently have noticed when driving at constant speed the Transmission hesitates/surges... I think. Into second gear at 40KMS (+/-25MPH) the truck RPM jumps without...

Another Gremlin... Time to move on?

Thanks @Schurkey - Sounds like quite the unit. I think I'd be looking for something a bit cheaper/simpler. @LC2NLS6 I have checked and set timing, as @PlayingWithTBI mentioned my disconnect was in the loom on firewall. I was actually thinking of advancing timing as a possible carryover for the...

Another Gremlin... Time to move on?

Thanks for the info @Schurkey. The oil filter was clean when I tore it apart, at this point I'm not going to tear down this engine, I'm not sure its worth it for me - it's taken a bit just to get the truck this far. The IAC was cheap and was continually suggested by some friends who have more...

Another Gremlin... Time to move on?

Thanks @DonYukon and @454cid for the replies. Dont believe it idled much but who knows I guess. It was used by a farmer for hauling. I always forget the conversion is better going km to miles lol. I wanted a 4X4 but as a trailer hauler a RCSRW 1 Ton with that many KMs I couldnt pass up.

Another Gremlin... Time to move on?

Hey All, Quick preamble: 1988 GMC C3500 5.7L TH400, previously had stalling issues while driving; with your help narrowed down to ICM. Replaced - all good... Sort of. 1) Very low oil pressure when in D and stopped (100kpa/14PSI and less - today 0 and still running check gauges on). 2)...

    ISO: Daily Driver Suggestions...

Hey All, Interesting times in the vehicle market up here in the North. Is it the same down there? Have a unique opportunity to get rid of my 2018 GMC now for exactly what I commited and be done with payments. Considering using my 88 C3500 RCLB for work instead, although 2wd is less than ideal...

    Distributor replace/align

@Erik the Awful Yep, couldn’t find any local so I’ve got some from Amazon coming. Gonna throw some on the Iroc’s as well. Haven’t had an issue but now that I know lol... Thanks @PlayingWithTBI Good suggestion, I had tried initially when you mentioned but it would die anyway. Not it actually...

    Distributor replace/align

Thank you all for your help on this. @PlayingWithTBI you were indeed correct the ICM was bad. I went back through and confirmed it was put back together properly, drove with EST on, off and stalled all over town, got back to my street and ended up calling my wife to help me push lol. In...

    Distributor replace/align

Morning guys. So here's what I did. After second guessing myself for the last day and evening I went right back to the original distributor, cap and rotor and marks. Fired right up. Code for EST (42) registered which was fine as it was unplugged. Couple questions for you just so I can learn from...

    Distributor replace/align

@Schurkey just caught last post after my novel. I will try the EST plug in am. And confirm spark/fuel. Thanks!

    Distributor replace/align

Interesting read @Schurkey I will have a look at the two I have (new/used) in the AM and compare. Wonder if it was weakened/cracked before it left the factory floor? @RawbDidIt I'm not sure how that would happen this is already deeper than I like to go lol. I did try two more things - 1 back...

    Distributor replace/align

Hey @RawbDidIt I lined up the timing mark to 0 and used the compression tester hose with glove to verify (I think) compression stroke. Is this correct? Thanks

    Distributor replace/align

Well here I am looking for some life coaching again ... With engine at TDC, suspect on compression stroke as I plugged in a compression tester with a rubber glove finger on the end (real classy lol) and had the wife keep an eye on it until it filled with air. Pulled old distributor, dropped in...

    Distributor replace/align

Great stuff guys. Thanks so much for all the input and help. Spent the day removing the PO’s undercoating that wasn’t prepped right. Needed a break from under the hood! @RawbDidIt Just to confirm as long as I’m confirmed TDC I should have no issues pulling out existing distributor, replacing...

    Distributor replace/align

That’s how you got an education then! I’m hoping I can get this beast figured to have as a daily driver. You guys got slammed pretty hard down there. We have friends in Harlingen they got cold but not much snow. Up here we test trucks in opposite weather. We hit -52 at beginning of March

    Distributor replace/align

Thanks for the reply @RawbDidIt some I knew some I didn’t so it’s good to hear it all lol! I never checked individual cylinders, never even paid attention to plugs until I had them all out to rotate engine. if I follow, as long as timing is set with est plug disconnected, then reconnected, and...

    Distributor replace/align

Hey all. 1988 GMC Sierra C3500 5.7L. Stalling when warm. Previously thought fuel issue now dealership has confirmed no pulse from distributor at stall. Looking to replace distributor but have never done one. At TDC the rotor is NOT pointing to the #1 cylinder. Plenty of marks on engine and...

Timing vs. Idle vs. Throttle Spacer WTH?

Thanks @Nad_Yvalhosert but my latest gaffe put me even further behind, currently need help just getting the distributor back in a range to get the truck running. Seeing the marks nearly 1/4 turn apart makes me believe the distributor wasnt correctly installed in the first place.
